Neighborhood Overview
The name refers immediately to Prazeres Cemetery, a magical place and the largest cemetery in the city, a true open air museum, possessing important elements for understanding Portugal’s contemporary history. Right next to it, located in upper town, you will find Tapada das Necessidades park, created here in the XVIII century. It is composed by a garden and a palace of unquestionable wealth and grandeur, it remains a Lisbon hidden treasure and few are aware of its magnitude and historic charm – an ideal oasis for a walk in the evening. Today, the palace is occupied by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and and so this is a very policed area and one of the safest of the entire city. However, this neighborhood is more than that! Heading the river we will find an old Lisbon neighborhood that has kept its original buildings. It is an extension of the surrounding neighborhood: Santos, because of its narrow streets, the population (which is mostly made up of families), and the Tagus on your the doorstep. This is an area where traditional trade prevails.
